National Youth Day
  1. National Youth Day is observed annually on 12 January to commemorate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, whose ideas on youth, character and nation-building continue to guide India.
  2. National Youth Day 2026 aligns with India’s long-term vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, recognising youth as central drivers of national transformation.
  3. India has over 65% of its population below 35 years of age, giving it one of the world’s largest demographic dividends.
  4. MY Bharat platform and National Service Scheme (NSS) are key institutional mechanisms enabling large-scale youth engagement in volunteering, leadership and civic participation.
  5. The government is strengthening the education-to-employment pipeline through initiatives such as Skill India, PMKVY, PM-SETU, Agnipath and Startup India.
  6. Youth entrepreneurship and job creation are being promoted through skilling, startup incubation and defence-sector reforms like the Agnipath scheme.
  7. Health and well-being of youth is a policy priority, with programmes such as Fit India and Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram (RKSK).
  8. The Kashi Declaration emphasises holistic youth development, including mental health, fitness and substance-free living.
  9. Youth empowerment initiatives are coordinated by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports through inter-ministerial collaboration.
  10. National Youth Day reinforces the idea that Indian youth are not just beneficiaries of development but active partners in nation-building, echoing Swami Vivekananda’s vision of youth as a global force.
